Volunteer Opportunities

The Harn Homestead Museum needs volunteers to assist with the following:

  • Daily Guided Tours from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Gardening throughout the spring and summer months. Flexible schedule.
  • Haunt the Harn, October 2011 (Dates and Times to come)
  • Statehood Day Celebration - FREE admission from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., November 2011
  • Territorial Christmas Celebration, December, 2011 (Dates and Times to come)
  • Land Run Reenactment, April 2011 (Dates and Times to come)
  • Assisting with field trips

All internships offer a Flexible Schedule and a commitment of a minimum of 180 hours
Office Hours are Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Some evening and weekend work is required during special events

Company History:
The Harn Homestead is a non-profit historic museum dedicated to preserving the historic homestead that belonged to William Fremont Harn and educating the public about the territorial years of Oklahoma.  The museum encompasses 9.4 acres of original land run property and houses seven historical buildings.  Annually over 15,000 public, private and home-school children participate in the museum’s hands-on educational programming.  In addition, another 10,000 guests visit the property for tours of Mr. & Mrs. Harn’s historic home.  The Harn Homestead is available for private parties and corporate and civic events and also has four awareness events and one large fundraiser annually.  

Job Description:

  • Special Events Internship - Internship primarily responsible for assisting Executive Director with the execution of the Harn Homestead Museum’s 4th annual “Fondue Fandango” fundraiser and the 24th annual “Land Run Re-enactment” event.  Duties may include soliciting auction prizes, coordinating event logistics, managing deadlines, coordinating invitation mailings, poster distribution, and other publicity for the event.
  • Development & Fundraising Internship – Internship primarily responsible for assisting Executive Director with fundraising and development efforts for the Harn Homestead Museum.  Duties may include database management, coordination of direct mail fundraising solicitation, data entry, and grant research.
  • Education Internship – Internship primarily responsible for assisting Education Director with the Harn Homestead Museum’s successful educational field trip program.  Duties may include contacting teachers to schedule a field trip, working with elementary students during their program, public speaking, data entry, coordination of gift shop inventory, and volunteer coordination.
  • Marketing & Public Relations Internship – Internship primarily responsible for assisting Executive Director with the Harn Homestead’s marketing and public relations plan.  Duties may include scheduling the media to cover events, creating press releases, managing media database, managing Harn Homestead newsletter recipient database, poster distribution, and developing gorilla marketing, and social media/viral marketing opportunities.

Qualifications:
Coursework in communications, public relations, special events, fundraising, education, history or related field preferred.  Must possess a willingness to work with a diverse group of individuals in an outdoor environment.  Must have good organizational, customer service, outside sales, public speaking, excellent computer and time management skills.  Must be willing to dress in historic costumes that are provided when needed.  Work is both outdoors and indoors and does entail a lot of walking and standing.
