- How Do I Prepare My Child/Student For Their Visit?
Closed toe shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather on the day of the visit. Programming takes place outside in all weather so sunscreen, coats, or rain jackets are all a possibility on any given day. Please check the daily weather and choose their outfits and outerwear accordingly. In addition, students will need a lunch. Depending on the rotation schedule, lunch breaks are from 11:30-12:00 or 12:00-12:30. We have several picnic tables available, but coordinating with teachers and other parents for some picnic blankets is also a great idea!
- What is the Severe Weather Plan?
The Harn's storm cellar is still the original from 1904 and, while sound, it is not an adequate space for more than 20-25 people. The staff communicates with the schools in anticipation of these weather events. While we try to leave the cancellation decision up to the school staff, we do reserve the right to cancel programming in anticipation of bad weather.
- Is There Anything Else We Should Know Before We Visit
The museum does not have animals on the property with the exception of a couple of feral cats. We recommend sturdy lunch boxes that remain stored in our office or gift shop or in your vehicle prior to your lunch break because our kitties know what that paper sack means and they are not shy about inspecting it while you are busy with other activities.
Field trip programming is by reservation only. Most of our teaching staff are volunteers and are only present on the grounds when a field trip has been scheduled. You will have access to buildings and activities that are not usually included with our general admission tour. Watch Facebook and MetroFamily magazine for special programming dates if your child's school doesn't include us in their field trip rotation.
Our front office staff will not usually be ready to check teachers, students, and parents in until about 9:45 a.m. prior to our 10:00 a.m. opening because we are often outside on the grounds assisting with set-up in anticipation of your visit. We will open the front gate when we are ready for you! We are always very glad you are here!
